CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS

Like buses just when you want one two come along!

Joe Staddon has played very consistently this year and was rewarded by reaching the final of the Champion of Champions at Dorchester.  He played Brian Fitzgibbon from Sherborne in the final and won 21–12.

A fantastic achievement lets hope he doesn’t rest on his laurels next year!  Well done Joe.

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS

A heart felt message from Gill Moxom
“I want to thank everyone who has played for the second team for their wonderful support and hard work in getting us a promotion.
Twelve months ago we were all feeling rather despondent as we had gone down from the C league to the D league, but what a difference a year makes.  We were determined to go back up, we had a job to do and thanks to Sue's cunning plan (better than Baldrick’s) we did it.
Not only did we manage to get promotion, we did it in style, with a massive shot difference and became Champions to boot.  What a wonderful achievement.
I would like to thank Sue for all her encouraging E-mails and support at Selection.  This has helped the Team enormously.   I do appreciate that Sue let us have first choice of Rinks at Home games and realise this may sometimes have been to the detriment of the 1st and 3rd Teams.  So, Sue a really BIG thank you from me and the rest of the Team.
I must also mention Bobbie who is always so positive and encouraging and full of fun.  She never sees a bad wood even if it is staring her in the face, so thank you Bobbie.
Lastly, many thanks to ALL the ladies who played for us, in particular, Lola, Hilary and Jen.  Both Rinks tried exceptionally hard and worked as a team supporting and encouraging each other and it did pay off.  I am really looking forward to the B & D Lunch and hope as many of you as possible will be there and don't forget to raise the roof when we go up to receive the trophy.

Thank you everyone”.

Bank Holiday weekend 25/26th August 2019 saw the culmination of all the club knockout competitions expertly organised by Roger Parnell.  The green was prepared and cut on both days so along with the very sunny weather the weekend was enjoyed by players and spectators alike.  Tony Milton arranged a menu throughout the two days which many of us took advantage of.  The weekend would not have been such a success without all the volunteers and supporters.  Well done to Branksome Park Bowls Club.

There were some great battles over the two days (Full Results below) culminating in the men’s and ladies singles finals which started at 2.30 pm with a very knowledgeable and supportive audience.

Hilary Jenkins played Lyn Gamblin and her experience as a skip won the day.  Whenever she was in trouble a forcing shot got the points.  Lyn nearly got back on level terms but Hilary was very consistent and ran out a worthy winner.

The men’s final featured Barry Stone and Jim Garner both very experienced singles players.  Barry got off to a fast start and at one time led 18/13.  Then suddenly the momentum changed and Jim edged back to 18/18.  Both players played some great running shots and drew accurately when they had to.  Jim was holding two and Barry had one bowl in his hand, if he could pick up the jack he may have won but it just passed by and Jim won 21/20.

During this season 2019 the men formed ten teams of triples (each team consisting of a squad of five or six players) playing a ‘ round robin ‘ over 9 weeks.  The teams were named and players in each selected and seeded to ensure a blend of talent right across the board.  Each game consisted of two sets of 9 ends.  If a game was drawn then one extra end was played to decide the winner.  A range of 0  - 6 points per game was on offer as well as penalty points for ‘ no shows’.  After the first penalty points were awarded there was a 100% attendance for the rest of the games.

The competition and banter rights were hard fought and on the last night there were fours teams in the running to take the title of Ultimate Triples Champions.

Our sincere thanks to Alan Gamlin & Chris Dennis for organising the competition, to Tony Milton and the ladies who provided players and supporters with food and to Bob Harris for running the bar.

Third place went to Banksies Beauties who won on count back from The Gardeners.

Ultimate Triples - 3rd Place

Dave Banks receiving 3rd prize on behalf of his team

Second place went to The Archie’s
Ultimate Triples - 2nd Place
Dave Kirkham accepted the prize on behalf of the team

First place went to The SinneD who were all present to receive their prize from Club Captain Alan Bliss.

The SinneD consisting of Chris Dennis / Alan Trevett / Frank Westfield / Andy Roberts and Brian Prosser with Alan Bliss and Alan Gamblin who looked after the running of the competition.

The American Tournament

The American Tournament, known as the David Potter Cup, took place on Sunday 11th August.  Roger Parnell made all the arrangements and this year remembered to book a sunny day.  Last year he forgot and it poured!  A full complement of 40 competitors took part drawn in teams of four, allegedly according to their ability!  A close contest was expected between some highly competitive teams and a lot of friendly rivalry.  Our Vice President David ‘Bacon Roll’ Banks suited and booted joined in the banter even though he was prohibited from the playing surface.

David Potter Action

Some of the action (it appears to be all uphill for these players!)

The unexpected outcome was a landslide victory for the team consisting of Tom Whelan, Jackie Collishaw, Colin Burns and Michael King with a final shot difference of plus 26.  It was noted that Jackie took charge from the beginning and organised her male charges into a sleek and winning combination, not an easy task!  A very distant second place went to the team of President Bobbie Cover, David Kirkham, Liz Frew and Paul Avern with a score of plus 9, they received a bottle of ‘special’ wine each.

The David Potter Cup, engraved glasses and superior wine were formally presented by Stephen Nimmo of Chester Pearce and Harmony Funeral Service, our sponsors for the day.  David Potter, Stephen's grandfather, had been a keen bowler and each year the family support this tournament in his name by presenting the club with a cheque for £250.00.  Stephen was accompanied by his mother who was presented with a bouquet of flowers from the members in appreciation of this great and generous gesture.
